Red Coral has been used as a decorative material for thousands of years in many cultures around the world. Coral is an organic jewelry material made from the calcium carbonate skeletons produced by millions of coral polyp colonies in the ocean. The name coral is derived the Greek work "kura-halos," meaning "mermaid," because the fine branches of the coral sometimes look like people. Coral used in jewelry does not come from protected tropical coral reefs, but rather from the species "corallium rubrum," (technically a fast growing sponge), and is sustainably farmed in Indonesia. Many people think that coral, when worn against the skin, can ward off evil, reduce tension and fear, and improve the health of the one who is wearing them.
